Glencore said in a report on July 31 that its coal production declined 15% year on year to 58.10 million tonnes in the first half of this year, mainly due to some operations' suspension in Colombia amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over January-June, its thermal coal output totaled 45.30 million tonnes, falling 3.8 million tonnes, with output from Australia down 5.43% to 33.10 million tonnes.

Of the total thermal coal production from Australian operations, 29.40 million tonnes were for export, down by 5% year on year, while 3.7 million tonnes for domestic consumption, down 8%.

Of thermal coal output of South African mines, 7.2 million tonnes (7% YoY) and 5.0 million tonnes (-32% YoY) were for export and domestic markets, respectively.

In the first six months, Glencore saw 3.7 million tonnes of coking coal output from Australia, falling 14% year on year, while semi-soft coking coal output was down 21% to 2.6 million tonnes.

Cerrejon, accounting for 33.3% of Glencore's coal output, produced 2.70 million tonnes of coal during the same period, slumping 36% year on year, as the mine remained suspended from March until early May.

Its Predeco mine in Colombia produced 3.80 million tonnes of coal, down by 48% year on year due to the suspension.

In the report, Glencore said it will lower coal production goal for 2020 to 111-117 million tonnes from previous 129-135 million tonnes as Predeco mine is still closed.
