Wuhai, in China's one of three largest coal bases of Inner Mongolia, started cancelling night shift at local mines, after more than four months of preliminary research and preparation work, according to the Inner Mongolia Coal Mine Safety Supervision Bureau.
The plan to cancel the night shift is currently only carried out in the pilot city of Wuhai and may be rolled out to other areas of Inner Mongolia in the future.
The cancellation of night shifts can efficiently reduce mining accidents caused by sleepiness and inattention of miners, and helps to promote shift from manual labour to mechanization and automation.
Statistics data showed, Wuhai has witnessed a total 18 safety accidents at local coal mines since 2010, causing 20 deaths. Eight workers died in seven accidents during the night shift
The number of accidents and deaths were respectively accounted for 38.9% and 40% of Wuhai's total during the same period.
