China issued an action plan to subsidize newly-commissioned biomass power plants in order to boost development of the renewable sector and reduce emissions.
The central government will appropriate as much as 1.5 billion yuan ($222 million) this year to subsidize biomass power plants, according to a notice jointly issued on September 17 by the National Development and Reform Commission, the National Energy Administration and the Ministry of Finance.
Biomass power plants eligible to get access to the subsidies should be those that are incorporated into national or provincial development plans and have got their all units connected into the grid after January 20.
The subsidies will be presented in a chronological order of grid connection. Power plants that got their all units connected earlier are prioritized until all subsidies are finished.
Biomass is an important part of renewable energy, which also plays a big role in the processing of agricultural, forestry and household wastes. In recent years, biomass power industry has been developing steadily.
As of the first half of 2020, China's biomass installed capacity totaled about 25.2 GW, ranking first in the world.
Data showed China's biomass power generation saw a 14% increase year on year to 90.6 TWh in 2018. In the first quarter of 2019, biomass power generation increased 16.7% on the year to 24.5 TWh.
China could collect about 715 million tonnes of coal equivalent of biomass resources, or about 20% of the country's total energy consumption, but only a tiny share of these resources can be switched into valid power. Therefore, there's a still a large space for the biomass development in the future.
