South Korea imported 11.77 million tonnes of coal in September, 3.5% higher than 11.37 million tonnes in September 2019, and up 18.19% compared with 9.96 million tonnes a month ago, the highest level since January, 2020, showed data from South Korea Customs.

Australia was the largest coal supplier to South Korea in September, at 4 million tonnes, up 9.53% from August but down 3.84% from the previous year.
Russia followed with coal shipment of 3.28 million tonnes to the country, marking a year-on-year growth of 47.8% and a month-on-month increment of 56.44%.
Indonesia took the third place with 2.76 million tonnes of coal supply in September, increasing 0.3% year on year and 66.04% month on month respectively.
Over the same period, South Korea spent a total of $799 million in coal import, down 17.04% year on year, but up 14.14% month on month. The coal import price therefore was calculated at $67.91/t, a year-on-year drop of 19.84% and month-on-month decrease of 3.43% respectively.
In the year to September, the coal import of South Korea totaled 92.43 million tonnes, down 11.21% from the year-ago level; the nation spent $7.28 billion in coal import, down 32.69% from the previous year.
