Colombia's coal output is expected to fall by 28.4% over the next decade, according to government predictions, but the rising price for coal will improve the condition.
Coal is Colombia's largest export. By 2030, its coal production is expected to fall to 53 million tonnes from 74 million tonnes this year. But coal prices are forecast to rise from $29/t to 46/t.
Slowed economic growth in China, rising renewables and coal oversupply have harmed demand for coal.
Colombia's mining future is metals, rather than coal, Diego Mesa, the country's Mines and Energy Minister, said in an interview with Reuters.
