Japan's thermal coal import (bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) picked up 7.49% from a month ago to 8.5 million tonnes in September, showed data from the nation's Ministry of Finance (MOF).
The September import still contracted 6.95% from the same period in 2019.

Japan imported a total 78.39 million tonnes of thermal coal imports from January to September, 4.79% lower than the year-ago level of 82.33 million tonnes.
Bituminous Coal
In September, Japan imported 7.72 million tonnes of bituminous coal, falling 8.56% year on year, but up 8.28% month on month.
Australia remained as the largest bituminous coal supplier to Japan, exporting 5.34 million tonnes in September, down 14.72% year on year but rising 6.31% month on month.
Russia followed with 1.22 million tonnes, dropping 2.55% year on year and 13.79% month on month.
Canada took the third place by shipping 530,900 tonnes in September, surging 60.73% year on year and 216.8% month on month.
Import value of bituminous coal in September stood at 59.33 billion yen ($8.85 billion), gaining 4.84% from August. The import price therefore averaged 7,686.66 yen/t, down 3.17% from the month-ago level of 7,938.5 yen/t.
Sub-bituminous Coal
Japan's sub-bituminous coal imports in September increased 12.69% from a year ago and rose 0.27% from a month ago to 777,700 tonnes.
The nation imported largest amount of sub-bituminous coal from Indonesia, totaling 541,500 tonnes, falling 17.59% YoY and holding steady MoM.
The shipment from the US grew by 28.17% on the month to 91,900 tonnes in September.
Over the same period, the import value of sub-bituminous coal in Japan decreased 3.35% from August to 5.21 billion yen. The average import price of sub-bituminous coal was calculated at 6,710.93 yen/t.
