Taiwan's coal imports in December hit a new low since February, 2020, showed the preliminary statistics from Taiwan customs.
Coal imports fell 20.42% month on month and 11.77% year on year to 3.99 million tonnes in December.
Thermal coal imports decreased 20.86% from November and 12.04% from a year ago to 3.95 million tonnes in the month.
Bituminous coal imports dropped 27.05% on the year and 23.6% on the month to 3.03 million tonnes in December; sub-bituminous coal imports totaled 927,600 tonnes, surging 167.47% year on year but down 10.34% month on month. Imports of anthracite were 40,300 tonnes, up 27.13% YoY and 75.22% MoM.
In December, Taiwan imported 1.37 million tonnes of coal from Australia, down 38.46% YoY and 35.9% MoM; imports from Indonesia reached 1.28 million tonnes, rising 25.87% YoY but falling 23.76% MoM; shipments from Russia decreased 3% on the month but rose 15.54% on the year to 915,600 tonnes.
Total value of coal imports reached $302 million in December, down 30.25% YoY but up 19.25% MoM. Average import price was thus calculated at $75.6/t, down 20.95% YoY but up 1.47% MoM.
Through 2020, Taiwan's coal imports fell 5.88% year on year to 63.14 million tonnes, which were worth $4.94 billion, 29. 45% lower than the year prior.
