Sixteen power utilities in Anhui, Jiangsu and other provinces and cities in Yangtze River Delta have put out an alert about potential supply shortage of thermal coal as coal inventories were dropping to the waning line amid surging electricity demand in the area during cold snap, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
In response to the alert, China Railway Shanghai Bureau has worked closely with rail authorities in Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia, the country's top three coal production provinces, to allocate some emergency coal supplies to power plants in the Delta in batches, CCTV reported.
Coal handling volume at major freight stations on the Yangtze River Delta railway system has increased significantly, with the average daily load exceeding 3,000 trucks.
The transport volume of thermal coal for power generation has remained at about 1,800 to 2,000 trucks, doubling the normal level and hitting a recent high.
Railway departments in the Yangtze River Delta have transported more than 7.77 million tonnes of coal in just 39 days over December 2020 to January 8 this year, up 12.8% compared with the same period a year ago, statistics showed, effectively ensuring coal supplies to power plants in eastern and southeastern China.
