Mongolia exported 28.59 million tonnes of coal in 2020, falling 21.61% year on year, showed latest data from Mongolian Customs General Administration (MCGA) on January 14.
Value of the exports totaled $2.12 billion, slumping 30.92% year on year, the data showed.
As the administration didn't release December 2019 data, sxcoal.com calculated the country's coal exports in December at 1.59 million tonnes, down 5.58% year on year and tumbling 49.28% month on month, hitting a new low since May 2020.
Mongolia's coal exports to China totaled 27.21 million tonnes in the year, down 23.99% year on year. Shipments in December were calculated at 1.54 million tonnes, down 4.78% year on year and 47.63% month on month, accounting for 97% of the country's exports.
In 2020, Mongolia's bituminous coal exports were 27.38 million tonnes, down 24.46% year on year; anthracite exports tumbled 75.89% to 21,700 tonnes. In December, its bituminous coal exports were calculated at 1.57 million tonnes, down 5.6% year on year and plunging 48.35% month on month; departures of other coals totaled 14,900 tonnes, up 1.33% year on year but diving 82.57% month on month. Mongolia didn't export anthracite in December.
Since the coronavirus epidemic reappeared, Mongolian coal exports to China have been significantly curbed due to the anti-virus measures imposed at the border. In November, only 595 coal trucks passed Ganqimaodu border crossing averagely each day, much lower than 903 trucks in October. In the last week of December, the figure even tumbled to 286.
Although daily passing trucks rose slightly in early-January, 2021, coal supply was still in shortages and exports to China remained at a low level. On January 5, 201 coal trucks passed Ganqimaodu border crossing, down 18 trucks week on week, but up 72 trucks day on day. The number of trucks passing Ceke border crossing was at 309, up 101 trucks day on day.
