Coal consumption by industrial sector in Shandong province logged a year-on-year decline of 10.4% to 370.62 million tonnes in 2020, with coal use of 43.13 million tonnes reduced, said press office of Shandong government on January 19.
The eastern province has been focusing on reduction of coal and thermal power while boosting renewables, nuclear power, natural gas and inbound electricity transmission, as a key part of its campaign to improve air quality and protect environment.
Last year, installed capacity of new energy and renewables units in Shandong totaled 47.91 GW, taking 30.1% of its total power capacity, compared with a 25.8% share in 2019.
Power generation of these units grew by 10.2% in 2020, and accounted for 14.3% of the province's total, helping cutting coal consumption by 3.1 million tonnes.
2020 saw 115.9 TWh of electricity transmitted to Shandong from other provinces, rising by 24% year on year, reducing coal usage of 9.12 million tonnes for power generation purpose.
The inbound natural gas reached 20.59 billion cubic meters last year, up by 14.2% on the year, slashing coal consumption by 4.77 million tonnes.
By end-2019, the province's energy consumption per unit of GDP slid 18.4% from the year prior, exceeding the reduction target by 1.4 percentage points set for the 13th "Five-Year Plan" period.
