A ±800 kV UHV DC transmission line from Sichuan to Jiangxi was put into operation, becoming the first UHV DC project that comes online during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), according to the operator State Grid Corporation of China on June 21.
The Yazhong-Jiangxi project, with a transmission capacity of 8 GW, starts from the Yalong River Converter Station in Liangshan prefecture, Sichuan province and ends at the Poyang Lake Converter Station in Fuzhou city, Jiangxi province.
The 1,696 km long line passes through Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces, with a total investment of 24.4 billion yuan.
The project was approved in August 2019 and started construction a month later. It plays a significant role in improving air conditions and facilitating the development of clean energy in Sichuan.
Sichuan is a hydro-rich province with a total of 148 GW of potential hydropower that can be developed technically, ranking first in the country. As of end-2020, Sichuan had 81.69 GW of clean energy installed capacity, and produced 358 TWh of clean power.
The Yazhong-Jiangxi transmission line is the fourth UHV line for Sichuan to deliver hydropower to other provinces, after the Xiangjiaba-Shanghai, Jinping-South Jiangxu and Xiluodu-West Zhejiang lines. There's another UHV line under construction at present, which will deliver electricity from Baihetan station to Zhejiang.
With the Yazhong-Jiangxi project commencing operation, Sichuan's transmission capacity has increased from previous 30 GW to 38 GW.
