India's government-run utility NTPC said it plans to add nearly 13 GW of thermal power capacity in the coming years, which will drive up the country's overall coal consumption.
NTPC is India's largest state-owned power company, and in fiscal year 2020-21 (April 2020-March 2021), the company added a total of 4.16 GW of new generation capacity, of which 3.58 GW were coal capacity.
The increase in overall coal power capacity will certainly drive India's domestic coal burning. In the FY2020-21, NTPC's coal consumption was about 170 million tonnes, of which 1.08 million tonnes were domestically supplied. During the same period, the total domestic coal production in India was 716 million tonnes.
As of the end of the last fiscal year, NTPC had a total generation capacity of 65.8 GW, of which 54 GW was coal based and the rest was sourced from gas, hydro and renewables. The company currently has 12.9 GW of coal capacity under construction.
NTPC also planned to vigorously develop renewable energy. The company plans to double its total generation capacity from current levels to 130 GW by 2032.
