Power supply situation has become tighter in Shaanxi due to the fast-rising power demand, persistent tight thermal coal supply and recent heavy rainfalls and floods, local media reported, citing data from a major grid company.
The peak power load in the province has reached 26.50 GW, according to State Grid Shaanxi Electric Power Co., Ltd. Supply and demand of electricity was in tighter balance that needs to rely on complementarity supplies from other provinces and renewables to meet peak demand, the major power company said.
On October 10, the 29 major power plants in the province held 2.18 million tonnes of thermal coal stocks, 46% lower compared with the year-ago level. The current thermal coal inventory can cover 8.1 days of usage on average in the context that power plants run at full capacity.
Besides, there is still large uncertainty in the supply of thermal coal in the near term, considering the overall undersupply status in the country. Shaanxi is assigned by the country's economic planner to shoulder 39 million tonnes of thermal coal supply task to 14 provinces and 9.26 million tonnes to local users in the fourth quarter.
With potential short supply risk, the grid company said it has quickly implemented the relevant requirements to guarantee supplies as much as possible.
The power major will further enhance fuel supply monitoring and early warning system, reporting fuel supply and consumption to the provincial development and reform commission daily and strengthening the coordination with miners to ensure supply. Meanwhile, it will further strengthen the dispatch and operation management of grid-connected generating units, and accelerate the allocation of surplus electricity in other regions.
People's livelihood and key electricity consumers' demand will be firstly ensured in case of power rationing.
