Shanxi saw 56 coal mines out of the 60 suspended mines caused by heavy rain and flood resume production, which had little impact on long-term contract coal supply promised by the coal-rich province, the provincial government said in a press conference on October 12.
The heavy rains persisted for a week since October 2, which forced 60 coal mines in Taiyuan, Jinzhong, Luliang, Jincheng, Linfen and Yuncheng to halt production. The rainfall-induced floods wreaked havoc to normal life and production in Shanxi, and once raised concern over coal supply to other provinces for the coming winter heating season.
The four coal mines still in suspension had combined capacity of 4.8 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). Three mines in Linfen remained halted for lingering safety hazards, with aggregated capacity at 3.6 Mtpa, while one in Tiyuan with annual capacity at 1.2 million tonnes as roads were blocked by landslide.
