The phase I project of a 4-GW coal-based power plant started construction in central China's Hunan province lately, local media reported.
The power plant, located in Huarong county, Yueyang city, is planned to deploy four 1GW ultra-supercritical coal-fired generating units.
The Phase I project, which consists of two units with a total investment of 7.24 billion yuan ($1.14 billion), is on track to start commercial operation at the end of 2023. The project is the largest of this kind in the pipeline in Hunan province and also a key construction project in the charge of China Energy Investment Corporation.
After the project comes online, it will effectively alleviate power tightness in the province, helping build the province as a national high-end manufacturing powerhouse and enhance tax income of the local government.
At the same time, a coal storage complex also broke the ground in the county. The complex is comprised of a coal-dedicated railway, a coal terminal and a logistics park, with a preliminary investment of 3.5 billion yuan. The annual coal throughput capacity is designed at 14 million tonnes.
The complex mainly will receive coal produced in northern China through Haoji railway and ship coal out through the coal terminal to ports along the Yangtze River.
The terminal will build four 3000-tonne coal wharves for the first phase. The railway measures 29.69km and already started construction in June 2020. The logistics park covers an area of 432,200 square meters, which can store about 600,000 tonnes of coal.
After the completion of the project, it will greatly facilitate the coal demand of the newly-built Yueyang power plant, and also change the status quo of no strategic coal reserve base in Hunan.
