India produced 9.39 million tonnes of finished steel in December 2021, a year-on-year decrease of 5.3% but a month-on-month increase of 1.9%, according to statistics from the Joint Plant Committee (JPC).
The country's finished steel consumption stood at 8.73 million tonnes last month, down 15% from the preceding year but rising 2.7% month on month. The increase in output and consumption was mainly ascribed to the recovery of domestic steel demand.
In the first nine months of this fiscal year (April-December 2021), India produced a total of 82.21 million tonnes of finished steel products, a year-on-year increase of 22.1%; and the cumulative consumption was 75.85 million tonnes, rising 16% from a year ago.
India's crude steel output was 9.89 million tonnes in December 2021, a year-on-year decrease of 3.9% yet a slight increase of 0.6% from the preceding month. From April to December, the cumulative production of crude steel stood at 87.07 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 18.6%.
The country exported 798,000 tonnes of finished steel products last month, rising 29.3% from the year-ago level and up 10.6% month on month.
