Coal India Ltd is committed to meeting the growing coal demand from the domestic power sector, including coastal power plants that depend on imported coal, an official said recently.
"Despite the company's supply constraints, we are committed to meeting the coal demand for the power industry to offset the supply tightness caused by Indonesia's ban on coal exports," the official said. "We have already started supplying to coastal power plants to ease the shortage of imported coal."
The Indonesian government has banned coal exports since January 1 due to a shortage of coal supply for Indonesian power plants, a move that has led to a tight supply of seaborne coal and driven international coal prices up again. The official said that India imports about 5-9 million tonnes of coal from Indonesia every month.
Coal India is currently working to ensure the supply to domestic power companies, with an average daily coal supply of 1.75 million tonnes, the official said.
India's electricity consumption rose 4.5% from a year earlier to 110.34 TWh in December from a year earlier, data from the power ministry showed.
Coal India has averaged 2.35 million tonnes of coal production per day in the month to January 16. The company is targeting 670 million tonnes of production for fiscal 2021-22. For the current fiscal year (ending January 16), Coal India's coal production was 445 million tonnes.
