A Maltese-flagged ship loaded with Russian coal and petroleum coke has docked at the port of Gijon, in the north of Spain on May 9, Reuters reported citing port authorities.
This indicates the EU's sanction against imports of coal from Russia are not yet fully implemented as the vessels from other countries loaded with Russian goods can still find their way to the Europe.
A Spanish transport ministry spokeswoman said on May 9 that Russian ships were banned from calling at ports in the country, but added that the EU's ban on ships from other countries loading Russian goods had not yet come into force.
On April 27, another Maltese-flagged vessel tried to enter the Port of Barcelona in Spain but was not allowed to access because it was carrying cargo transferred from a Russian ship under sanctions, according to a statement issued by the Spain's Transport Ministry.
