India's coal imports in April totaled 19.28 million tonnes, surging 49.97% year on year but falling 13.83% from March, hitting a three-year high of the same month, data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed.
The total value of coal imports in April was $4.76 billion, a 152.23% jump year on year and a 7.59% rise month on month. The average import price was calculated at $246.6/t, soaring 68.19% year on year and up 24.87% month on month.
Imports of thermal coal were 14.08 million tonnes in April, rising 50% year on year but falling 18.15% month on month; that of coking coal rose 47.97% on the year but decreased 1.38% on the month to 4.84 million tonnes.
In the month, imports from Indonesia topped all other origins, at 9.34 million tonnes, jumping 109.6% year on year but falling 11.84% month on month. This is followed by Australia's 4.2 million tonnes, up 2% year on year but down 9.34% month on month.
India's coal imports fell 5.73% year on year to 67.28 million tonnes during January-April this year, with value at $14.47 billion, a year-on-year surge of 117.63%.
