Power demand in China's Taiwan hit a new all-time high for June and will keep breaking that record in the next week as homes and businesses keep their air conditioners cranked up to escape a lingering heatwave.
On June 22, the island's peak grid load hit 39.27 GW, the third day for renewing the record, according to the regional largest power producer Taipower. This beat the Taipower's earlier expectation of 39.3 GW.
A late later, Taiwan's power demand touched a new high of 39.78 GW.
The blistering heat across the island, as well as economic growth and the epidemic, has boosted overall power use. The power demand looks set to create new highs in the next week, Taipower said.
The power producer has said it would grapple with enough resources to meet demand.
Taiwan has recently stepped up coal imports from overseas suppliers to ensure power supply sufficiency. Taipower floated a tender to import 1.2 million tonnes of thermal coal for delivery in August-December 2022.
