China's top coal province Shanxi moved to increase coal production by 107 million tonnes (Mt) year on year to 1.3 billion tonnes (Bt) in 2022, in response to the central government's call to boost output for stable power supply against the backdrop of higher-than-usual cooling demand in the summer and weaker imports, according to a work plan issued by the provincial government on Jun 20.


The province also planned to further coal production by 50 Mt to a total 1.35 Bt in 2023.


Shanxi produced 854.72 Mt of raw coal during January-August, representing 29% of the country's total.


Following the provincial government's guidance, several coal-rich cities in the province have announced their specific goals. Sxcoal have summarized them as follows:


Shuozhou city

Shuozhou looks to add no less than 7.3 Mtpa of capacity and produce no less than 166.27 Mt of coal in 2022 (excluding output from the coal mines owned by the Jinneng Holding Group).


The city's raw coal output made up 18.1% of Shanxi's total during January-August, making it the largest coal city in the top coal province.


Datong city

The city plans to increase 8-10 Mt of coal output in 2022 compared with the year-ago level.


Datong ranked third in raw coal output during January-August, representing 13.0% of Shanxi's total.


Jinzhong city

The city targets to raise coal production by 9 Mt MoM to 112 Mt resolutely while striving to produce 120 Mt in 2022.


It accounted for 6.2% of Shanxi's coal output during January-August, ranking sixth.


Taiyuan city

Taiyuan targets to ensure 48 Mt of coal production resolutely and will strive to produce 48.5 Mt in 2022. It aims to further expand output to 50 Mt in 2023.


The capital city in Shanxi ranked second from the bottom in raw coal production during January-August.


Changzhi city

The city looks to add 12 Mt of coal output from 2021 to 1.3 Bt this year, and eyes further increase of 5 Mt to 175 Mt in 2023.


Changzhi, ranking eighth in raw coal output in Shanxi during the first eight months this year, contributing 13.1% of in the province's total output. It is home to an abundance of meager coal and primary coking coal.


Luliang city

It plans to raise coal output by 7.83 Mt from 2021 to 163 Mt in 2022. This will require annual production of local- and central government-administrated enterprises to produce no less than 94.77 Mt of coal this year, with daily output no less than 260 Kt or even reach 270 Kt.


The city was the fourth largest coal producing city in Shanxi and produced 12.1% of the province's coal output over January-August 2022. It is home to 42.1 billion tonnes of proven reserves, including primary coking coal, lean coal, fat coal and gas coal.


Linfen city

The city will strive to increase coal production by 4.68 Mt year on year to 88.95 Mt in 2022, and add another 4 Mt to 92.95 Mt in 2023.


It accounted for 6.2% of Shanxi's coal output in the first eight months and is home to 34.8 billion tonnes of proven coal reserves, including primary coking coal, gas coal, fat coal and lean coal for coke production as well as meager coal and anthracite.


Xinzhou city

It plans to raise coal production by 6 Mt from 2021 to 115.5 Mt this year, and further increase 5 Mt to 120 Mt in 2023.


Xinzhou accounted for 8.2% of Shanxi's total output over January-August 2022, and mainly produces gas coal and 1/3 coking coal.
