South Africa is working to ensure sufficient coal supply in response to the instability of the power system and to avoid further blackouts.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa lately said that the government was taking measures to solve the power supply problem sustainably and permanently.

South Africa's national power company is also working to address the problem of coal's poor quality for power generation, which often leads to unit failures.

Currently, South Africa is still dominated by coal-fired power generation with coal responsible for 80% of its electricity.

Eskom is the country's largest electricity producer, with a coal-fired capacity of nearly 388 GW. Over the years, South Africa has been struggling with power supply problems. Due to a lack of generating capacity, Eskom has already cut power supply several times this year.

Eskom's CEO Andre de Ruyters said the country needs to spend nearly R1.2 trillion ($66.12 million) by 2030 to ensure enough generation, transmission and distribution capacity to meet the demand.
