Major power plants in central China's Hubei province consumed 7.27 million tonnes of coal in August, surging 76.4% or 3.15 million tonnes from a year ago, showed data from the local development and reform commission.
Last month marks the first month that Hubei's coal consumption broke through 7 million tonnes, hitting a record high.
Those plants received 6.53 million tonnes of power coal from other provinces in August, rocketing 52.3% or 2.24 million tonnes year on year,
By the end of last month, the combined coal stockpiles of major power plants in Hubei rose 198,000 tonnes from a month earlier to 4.86 million tonnes, continuously above the government-set stock target of 4.8 million tonnes.
