India targets to produced 1.5 billion tonnes of coal by 2030 to meet growing demand, Union Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines Minister Prahlad Joshi said at an investor conclave in Mumbai on December 1.
India's requirement for coal is increasing, with the total dispatch in the fiscal year 2013-14 at 572 million tonnes rising to 817 million tonnes in FY 2021-22. This year's figure is expected to reach 900 million tonnes, which is not able to fully fulfilled by domestic production, Prahlad Joshi said at the meeting.
Aiming to realize self-reliance in coal, India is working to develop sustainable coal mining, according to its coal minister.
The country's power demand is forecast to double by 2040. Even if India produces 50% of power from renewable resources, it still needs around 1.5 billion tonnes of coal. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the future of coal, Prahlad Joshi said.
