India's coal production stood at 89.96 million tonnes in January, compared with 79.65 million tonnes a year earlier, marking a 12.94% rise year on year, according to provisional data of the coal ministry.
State mining giant Coal India Ltd registered a production growth of 11.44% in January, while SCCL posted a growth of 13.93% and captive mines/other mines 22.89%. Coal India accounts for over 80% of domestic output.
Of the top 37 coal mines, production of 28 was more than 100% of their capacity, while output of three mines stood between 80-100% during the month.
Coal dispatch increased 8.54% to 81.91 million tonnes last month, compared with 75.47 milion tonnes in January 2022. Supply to power plants reached 67.72 million tonnes, up 8.01% year on year.
With an objective to enhance production capacity, the coal ministry has offered 141 new coal blocks for commercial auction.
The government has also amended the Mineral Concession (Amendment) Rules, 1960 under MMDR (Amendment) Act, 2021 to allow lessee of captive mines to sell coal or lignite up to 50% of the total excess production after meeting the requirements of the end-use plant.
