China's Erenhot border port, the largest inland port connecting Mongolia, imported 1.58 million tonnes of coal during January-April 2023, surging 117.5% from a year ago, according to the local government.
The volume was worth 1.24 billion yuan, rising 71.2% year on year.
China's State Council has kept zero import tariffs on coal till the end of 2023, a policy that is expected to save 210 million yuan in taxes for coal importing companies at the port during the year.
With the fully rolling out of the system of adopting third-party inspection on imported coal, the customs clearance cost has been further reduced, contributing to the surge in coal imports.
