Shandong province in eastern China has phased out a total 60.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of coal production capacity since the beginning of the 13th "Five-Year Plan" period (2016-2020), said the provincial government in a press conference on October 21.
The province pledges to meet the target of 64.6 Mtpa of coal capacity reduction by the end of ths yar.
In 2016, the first year of the campaign, the province closed all the coal mines each with capacity below 300,000 tonnes, accomplishing the central government's goal in advance. This has helped enhance concentration of the province's coal industry and increase capacity of single mine.
Currently, there are 99 operating coal mines in the province, with approved capacity combined at 132 Mtpa and single-mine capacity up 45% from 2015 to 1.33 Mtpa.
Shandong has maintained its coal production above 100 million tonnes for years and enjoyed stable development of coal industry.
In 2019, its coal industry realized a total revenue of 600 billion yuan and profit of 29 billion yuan, the best performance in seven years.
Since 2016, it has closed more than 5 GW of backward coal-fired power units.
