India's coal production (including lignite) rose 5.8% or 3.1 million tonnes year on year to 56.35 million tonnes in May, 2.9% or 1.6 million tonnes higher than than in April, showed the preliminary data from the Indian Ministry of Coal.
State-run Coal India Limited (CIL) churned out 42.08 million tonnes of coal in May, rising 1.7% year on year. The second largest state-owned coal miner Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) produced 5.44 million tonnes, a jump of 68.42% year on year while lignite output fell 6.3% on the year to 3.08 million tonnes. Captive miners' production increased 7.26% to 5.75 million tonnes.
India's coal production amounted to 361 million tonnes in January-May, up 0.8% year on year, marking the first positive growth since 2021.
Coal production from CIL fell 2.8% year on year to 287 million tonnes during the same period, while that from SCCL rose 20.1% to 28.22 million tonnes. Captive miners' production increased 26.7% to 31.98 million tonnes, and lignite production totaled 12.97 million tonnes, down 3.9% year on year.
