Anhui has adopted orderly power consumption measures since September 22 as the provincial energy bureau expected a further expansion of power supply gaps which could extend to mid-October.
Thermal coal stocks at local power plants have been hovering at low levels since the start of the year. As of September 21, local power plants held around 1.48 million tonnes of the fuel, more than halved from the year-ago level, according to the provincial energy authority.
Anhui launched the orderly power use measures to combat the low coal inventories, shutdown of defective generating units and tight supply of power from other provinces.
This kind of situation is common in east China. It is understood that the coal inventories at thermal power plants in the country continued declining, and power generation was also tracing the decrease, driving more than 10 provinces to take rational power use approaches.
Despite the regional power shortage, the provincial energy bureau has been working with power grid companies to tentatively allocate around 1.2 GW power supply capacity to the province, yet there is still around 2.5 GW of gap, which needs to addressed through orderly use of electricity.
Anhui Energy Bureau has organized power grid companies to closely track changes in weather, accurately study the power load, available power generation capacity, supply-demand gaps, and actively seek power support from outside the province.
At the same time, the bureau has also strengthened the coordination and supervision of power generation companies to promptly initiate early warnings of coal and power supply shortage, and meanwhile strived to ensure power supplies to people's livelihood and key power users.
