Coal exports from the three major North Queensland terminals were 9.59 million tonnes in December, down 21.64% from a year earlier and 6.19% from November.

The data showed that coal exports through North Queensland's three major terminals totaled 128 million tonnes in the year, down 2.19% year on year.

North Queensland mainly exports coal through Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay and Abbot Point coal terminals.

Abbot Point is the most northerly and has the lowest handling capacity of the three terminals. It exported 2.26 million tonnes of coal last month, falling 13.93% year on year but rising 4.01% month on month, bringing the total volume to 29.14 million tonnes in 2021, a 2.37% drop.

In December, exports from Dalrymple Bay coal terminal, which has a handling capacity of 85 million tonnes per year, were 3.92 million tonnes, down 24.48% year on year and 23% month on month, taking the cumulative amount to 54.09 million tonnes from January to December, down 0.89% on the year.

In the month, the export volume of Hay Point coal terminal was 3.41 million tonnes, declining 22.88% year on year but growing 15.21% month on month. The terminal, with an annual handling capacity of 55 million tonnes, exported 44.8 million tonnes of coal over January-December, a 3.59% fall.

The vast majority of North Queensland's exports are coking coal.
