Japan imported 15.86 million tonnes of coal in December, up 3.5% on the year, preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance showed on January 20.
The imports were worth 375.95 billion yen ($3.29 billion), surging 178.4% on the year, the data showed.
Imports from Russia were 1.38 million tonnes, down 29.2% year on year; value jumped 77.9% to 28.43 billion yen. Receipts from the U.S. rose 11.7% to 970,000 tonnes, while value of the imports jumped 80.6% to 17.93 billion yen.
Imports of thermal coal that is mainly used for power generation rose 7% to 9.91 million tonnes, which were worth 215.71 billion yen, up 195.4% year on year.
Thermal coal imports from Russia were 1.01 million tonnes in December, down 36.5% on the year; value rose by 68% to 20.76 billion yen; American thermal coal imports jumped 47.5% to 289,000 tonnes, with value hiking 340% to 6.67 billion yen.
In December, Japan imported 7.04 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas, a 8.9% drop on the year; value doubled to 597.08 billion yen.
