South Africa's state electricity company Eskom announced on August 3 that it has escalated power cuts from the original Stage 2 to Stage 4 from 4 p.m. local time until 12 p.m. on August 4 due to insufficient power generation capacity.
Previously, the company had decided to re-impose the nationwide daily Stage 2 restrictions from August 3. This means South Africa would have had a daily cut of 2,000 MW, which would result in two hours of power outages per day for each household.
Eskom said it was experiencing another power supply crisis due to delays in restoring several generating units to service while several others had broken down.
The company also said it will implement Stage 2 from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 4 and expected to repeat the same on August 5 from 5 a.m. until midnight.
