Glencore has scrapped an application for the Valeria coal project in central Queensland due to increased global uncertainty and its net zero emission goals, the company said in a statement.
The project was planned to be located 27 km north-west of Emerald of central Queensland with construction initially planned to begin in 2024.
The open-cast metallurgical and thermal coal mine was designed to produce up to 20 million tonnes of raw coal annually with an operate life of 37 years.
Glencore said it will continue to progress various brownfield expansion works at existing coal mines in Australia, but plans to close Liddell, Newlands and Integra mines within the next four years.
