The Yangtze River hydropower corridor generated 276 TWh of electricity in 2023, up 5.34% from a year earlier, according to operator China Three Gorges Corporation.
Stretching 1,800 km along the Yangtze River and its tributaries, the corridor harnesses the power of six giant dams including the world's largest Three Gorges Dam.
Four dams on the Jinsha River tributary – Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba – along with Three Gorges and Gezhouba on the middle section, powered the clean energy production.
With a combined installed capacity of 71.7 GW from 110 generating units, the corridor transmits clean hydropower to energy-hungry eastern and central regions.
The output can be otherwise produced by 83 million tonnes of standard coal (7,000 Kcal/kg NAR), which would emit over 200 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, China Three Gorges said.
In 2023, China's power generation from all sources totaled 8,909.1 TWh, a 5.2% rise from 2022, official statistics showed. Hydropower declined 5.6% to 1,140.9 TWh.
