Japan produced 6.99 million tonnes of crude steel in February, falling 3.8% month on month (MoM) yet up 1.1% year on year (YoY), according to data released by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation.
The output of ordinary steel was 5.47 million tonnes, down 2.3% from the preceding month yet rising 1.1% from a year ago; that of special steel was 1.52 million tonnes, down 8.9% MoM but up 1.0% YoY.
In February, Japan's blast furnace steel production stood at 5.12 million tonnes, decreasing 5.6% MoM yet rising 1.4% YoY; electric furnace steel output was 1.87 million tonnes, up 1.6% MoM and 0.1% YoY.
The production of hot-rolled coils in Japan was 2.85 million tonnes over the same month, dipping 8.5% MoM but up 4.1% YoY; H-beam steel production stood at 251,000 tonnes, declining 6.8% MoM and 4.1% YoY, data showed.
The production of pig iron was registered at 5.01 million tonnes in February, falling 6.2% MoM yet edging up 0.6% YoY.
Japan's crude steel production totaled 14.25 million tonnes over the first two months this year, ticking up 0.8% from the preceding year; the output of pig iron declined 0.4% YoY to 10.36 million tonnes.
