A gas explosion at a coal mine in eastern China's Anhui province caused seven fatalities and left two miners trapped underground, state media CCTV reported.
The accident occurred on March 11 at about 12:10 p.m. local time, when 24 miners were working underground. After the explosion, 22 were lifted to the ground. Seven out of the eight miners who were seriously injured have succumbed. Rescue efforts are currently underway to reach the two miners still trapped below ground.
The Xieqiao coal mine, operated by the branch of Huaihe Energy Group Co., Ltd., is designed with a production capacity of 9.6 million tonnes per annum.
The mine was in a state of normal production and possessed all the necessary licenses and certificates when the tragic accident occurred. It belongs to the category with risks of coal and gas bursts and intricate mining conditions.
