China's installed capacity of household distributed solar power has exceeded 100 GW, reaching 105 GW as of the end of September, said the National Energy Administration on its social media platform on November 14.

The milestone has helped push China's total solar power installation above 520 GW, making it the world's largest solar market.

More than 5 million rural households in China have installed distributed solar panels at present, driving over 500 billion yuan ($68.8 billion) in investment. The provinces of Shandong, Henan and Hebei have led the growth, accounting for 60% of the country's household solar capacity.

Experts predict there is still huge potential for expansion, with around 27.3 billion square meters of rural rooftop space suitable for solar panels, benefiting more than 80 million households.

In the first nine months of 2023, China added 32.98 GW of new household solar capacity, representing half of the nation's distributed solar growth and a quarter of its total solar expansion this year.

The rapid uptake of household solar supports China's goals to improve energy security, transition to green power and boost rural incomes.
